5 things to know to survive university life

More awareness, less worries

No one can go back in time to change the past, but each of us can move forward and improve our future. These are the 5 things we all wish we had known before leaving for university. Make good use of them!

1. Take advantage of your student status!

Your student status can allow you to take advantage of special discounts. These can relate to different types of expenses that a student faces. For example, you may be able to get discounts at the supermarket, gym, cinema, but also university discounts for Microsoft packages or academic websites. Check your university’s website to find out more.

2. Plan your new life.

A new life begins with the university experience. As such, many things change and you will need to reorganise your habits. Keeping a to-do list will allow you to better organise your time without stress. An example? Keep track of your expenses and keep a list of things you need to buy.

3. Inform yourself.

Especially when changing country or city, one of the main things you need to do is to get informed. Before you leave, remember to check all the documents you might need and the laws of the new place you are moving to.

Also, look up all the basic numbers you should have with you in case of an emergency. A little tip: keep this information in a notebook, and not just on your phone, in case it gives you problems, personal experience!

4. Talk to other students.

The best way to get to know the university environment you are going to is to talk to other students. Especially older students have already been through their freshman period and will have made the mistakes you would make too. Therefore, talking to them will be a necessary source of insight into the new university world you’re entering, while also making friends!

5. Don’t be afraid!

University is a wonderful time which you must enjoy. Many of us have already been away from home or still are. Having the opportunity to move away from your comfort zone is an advantage. Despite the fear and homesickness you may feel at first, being away from home is an opportunity for improvement and empowerment that should not be underestimated.
